Federalist Papers

Scholars have attributed each of the papers to a primary author, which we have listed below: Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, or James Madison. Each paper is title by its number, name1, newspaper that first published it, date of publication, and attributed primary author. Papers 78-85 where not first published in newspapers but where bound.

Superscripts (footnotes) are the authors; however the use of numbers has replaced any non-numbers they may have used. Editoral notes are denoted by the use of “P” and a number combination.

Capitalization, italicization, and other original emphasis has been mirrored a closely as possible.

  1. The text for the papers listed below is a combination of Wesleyan University Press from the 1960’s and the “McLean” 1788 edition. Errors have been corrected, such as lapses, punctuation and spelling are modernized. The main heads are taken from the “McLean” edition, however where they have used  ”The Same Subject Continued” it has been amended by use of the previous head with “(continued)”, allow for a better stand alone paper.
