Vernon L. Robinson Congressional Candidate North Carolina District 8
Biography of Vernon L. Robinson
Biography from RobinsonForCongress.com
The 8th Congressional District in North Carolina is currently represented by a liberal Democrat, Larry Kissell, who masquerades as a moderate during election time. Partly because the General Assembly redistricted the 8th District in a fair and legal way, Larry Kissell’s days as Nancy Pelosi’s ally are numbered. The question for the good people of the 8th District in NC is, “What kind of a Republican are you going to send to Washington to represent your conservative values?” A squishy, wobbly, untested RINO Republican need not apply.
Vernon L. Robinson is a Reagan conservative who believes in the values that made America great: a limited government, faith in God, a commitment to Constitutional principles, and service to country. He has been tested and has rung true every time. Vernon believes that with the right leadership, America can remain a beacon of hope and a model of prosperity for the world to emulate.
Vernon Robinson’s background
Vernon Robinson is a former US Air Force Officer and educator who lives in Concord, NC. He led the education reform effort in North Carolina from 1993 to 2006 as founder and President of the North Carolina Education Reform Foundation. He is active in the Republican Party and, prior to moving to Concord, he served 8 years on the Winston-Salem City Council. He is married with 3 children, and attends church at Concord First Assembly.
The son of a Tuskegee airman, V. L. Robinson, Jr., and nurse educator, Dr. Stella P. Robinson, Vernon graduated from the US Air Force Academy in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Middle Eastern History. He also studied French, Russian, and Arabic. He was a Missile Combat Crew Commander in the 351st Strategic Missile Wing at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri. Robinson earned an MBA from the University of Missouri while on active duty. He also served as an Air Intelligence Officer in the Reserves.
As a faculty member at Winston-Salem State University in what is now the School of Business, Vernon became concerned about the lack of college-level preparation in many of his students. Vernon traced that problem back to the public schools of North Carolina. In 1996, he was honored to be the Republican nominee for State Superintendent of Public Instruction.
Doing the hard work of freedom
Vernon founded the North Carolina Education Reform Foundation in 1993 to educate the public, elected officials, and opinion makers about market reforms such as charter public schools and tuition scholarships. The Foundation played a central role in the charter school movement in North Carolina, combating the education establishment’s efforts against charter schools while offering assistance to those interested in starting charter schools. Vernon has been hailed as a trailblazer for education reform and has received recognition for his pioneering efforts from the NC Charter Schools Association in 2011.
Vernon Robinson’s public service
Vernon was elected to the Winston-Salem City Council in 1997 and served 8 years until 2005. On the Council, he fought for public safety and right-sizing government. He opposed tax increases, forced annexation, and giving public money to special interests and private corporations. He successfully forced the United Way to abandon its efforts to defund the Boy Scouts of America, whose organization has done so much to instill pro-American, morally upright values in young men. Dr. James Dobson featured Vernon’s efforts on his “Focus on the Family” radio program, and called Vernon’s crusade a victory for people of faith across the nation.
Vernon also supported a public display of the founding documents of the Republic. He presented the City with an 1800 lb. blue granite monument of the Ten Commandments on one side and the Bill of Rights on the other. In 2005, Robinson highlighted the increase of Hispanic gang activity on the south side of Winston-Salem and was criticized by the Left.
Vernon Robinson, principled Conservative
Vernon Robinson is a principled Conservative in the mold of the late NC Senator Jesse Helms. Many times in his career, Vernon has been compared to the great former Senator.
In 2006, liberal Raleigh News & Observer columnist Barry Saunders called Vernon “Jesse [Helms]‘s spiritual heir,” and wrote of Vernon’s campaign, “My, but I’ll bet Jesse is proud.” Another liberal newspaper, The Winston-Salem Journal, has directly compared Vernon to former Senator Helms with their column headlined, “Jesse Helms is back! This time he’s black.”
But the highest praise came from Senator Helms himself who in 2003 said at the National Right to Work Foundation dinner, “I want to recognize Vernon Robinson. We’re lucky to have his conservative voice. He’s done a great job on the Winston-Salem City Council, and I wish him well in his campaign for Congress.”
Vernon Robinson learned from Jesse Helms that “one man who is right constitutes a majority.”
You can depend on Vernon as your Congressman to maintain a consistent, conservative approach to the vital issues of the day. He’s your tested, tried, and true conservative choice in the 8th district.
