Biography of Al Mickle from Al Mickle For Congress
“I enjoyed all the usual youthful activites while being raised by my grandparents in Calera. My siblings and I were active in church, sports, and school activities – as well as just being young and full of energy. My grandfather served in WWII, so my brother and I were taught from an early age a respect and understanding for the fact that the freedom we enjoyed in these United States was preserved by the men and women who were willing to risk their very lives defending our Constitution and our Country. My older brother served in Vietnam, and I served in Desert Shield, Desert Storm, and Somalia. My younger brother will soon be leaving on his 5th deployment to the Middle East since 2001. I, as well as my family, understand what it means to be able to live in the U.S.A. We also understand that while we took an oath many years ago, the oath is still relevant today.
After high school, I attended UAB until I joined the U.S. Navy in 1988 to serve as a Corpsman (FMF) with the Marine Corps. I was able to complete my coursework required for a Bachelor of Science degree while serving – but the education that I received from serving in a combat zone with the Marines was more valuable than any lessons that can ever be taught from a book. I learned that our great country is worth fighting for, that our Constitution is worth defending, and that our freedoms require men and women to take a strong stand against whatever forces that attempt to attack the very fabric that binds our country together.
After my time in the Navy, I began my career as a Sales Manager for several large corporations. I have experience in leading a business during a growing economy as well as in a stagnant cycle. I understand that profit, growth, success, and achievement are not ‘bad’ words. Also, I’ve learned that while “work” does only have four letters, it too is not a bad word. In fact, it is a requirement. My career has led me from managing one sales team to leading several teams and business units as a district and regional Sales and Service manager. I learned that no matter the level of personal responsibility in an organization, the very basic business principles must still be followed in order to grow that business.
While I’ve discussed many of the successes in my career, I’ve also made my share of mistakes. After eight years, my first marriage ended in divorce. Anyone who has ever experienced a divorce understands the soul searching, repentance, forgiveness, and growth that come from working through life’s many challenges. And while I would never wish a divorce for anyone, I also know that God can give beauty for ashes.
Now that you know I am not a perfect man, I can also tell you that I’ve been blessed beyond imagination. I have been married now for over eight years to an awesome bride, Karen. I am beyond proud of my three fantastic children, ages 17, 7, and 4. We live in Alabaster, and are active in our church, Bible study groups, youth athletic teams, community events, hunting, fishing, and many other things that we have the freedom in this country to enjoy. We are simply the people you see every day in your neighborhood, city, county, and state. I believe that my ‘average’ life gives me a unique perspective on the day-to-day issues that we all face.
My name is Al Mickle, and I want to serve you as your Representative in Congress.”
