Thaddeus McCotter bio from McCotter2012
Born in Detroit, U.S. Representative Thaddeus McCotter was first elected to Congress in 2002 to serve Michigan’s 11th Congressional District, which encompasses western suburban communities in Wayne and Oakland Counties. A politically swing district that is economically driven by manufacturing, its hard working residents have greatly struggled and suffered during the present recession; and this hard truth is at the core of McCotter’s fight for them and all Americans who feel their American dream endangered.
McCotter graduated from Detroit Catholic Central High School in 1983, where he was named an All-Catholic and All-State football player. He earned his B.A. (Summa cum laude, first in his class) from the University of Detroit in 1987; a J.D. from the University of Detroit School of Law in 1990; and, the same year, was admitted to the State Bar of Michigan.
McCotter is also a guitar player, who in his youth played in a band with his brother, Dennis, and others under various names, including the Flying Squirrels. Much later, after being elected to the U.S. House, he helped found a bipartisan band, The Second Amendments, which has played for our troops in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, and Germany, and for numerous charities.
Professionally, McCotter started his own law practice; and, though obviously no longer engaged in private practice, he remains a member of the State Bar of Michigan.
Regarding public office, McCotter served as a City of Livonia Youth Commissioner; and was elected a Schoolcraft Community College Trustee in 1989. Then, in 1992, McCotter was elected to the Wayne County Commission, where he successfully led the fight to amend the county charter to require a super-majority (60%) vote of the public before new taxes could be imposed on residents.
In 1998, McCotter was elected to the Michigan State Senate. There, after being elected by his peers to serve as their Assistant Majority Floor Leader, he earned a reputation as a tax-cutting, common sense, fiscal conservative. In 1999, McCotter led the Senate Law Revision Task Force that succeeded in repealing scores of unnecessary Michigan laws.
First elected in 2002 to Congress, then re-elected in 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2010, McCotter has focused his efforts on preserving and promoting manufacturing and small businesses, because he knows they form the back bone of our community’s economy. He has steadfastly supported winning the War for Freedom and increasing our homeland security; tirelessly fought to reduce taxes and the size and scope of government; and, most importantly, McCotter has dedicated every effort to listen to and serve his constituents.
McCotter was elected by his colleagues in November 2006 to serve as Chairman of the Republican House Policy Committee which he chaired through 2010. Currently, McCotter is a member of the House Financial Services Committee.
McCotter and his wife, Rita, a first generation Mexican-American and registered nurse, have three children, George, Timothy, and Emilia. The McCotter family lives in his home town of Livonia.
