Milad Pooran of Jefferson, MD is a physician who has been able to serve his community and country as both a civilian doctor and as a member of the US Air Force Medical Corps.
At the age of six, Milad immigrated with his parents to the United States. Milad’s parents, both engineers, instilled in him the importance of civic service, dedication, and a passion for knowledge. His father worked on systems design for the space shuttle robotic arm, and the time Milad spent as a boy in his father’s lab fostered a yearning for discovery and a love of flight.
Milad grew up in Beltsville, Maryland and attended Eleanor Roosevelt High School. At the University of Maryland, College Park, he earned a bachelor degree in biochemistry. At Maryland, he was a sports broadcaster for the student radio station and provided color commentary for Maryland Terrapins’ home games and weekly news sportscasts. He was Phi Beta Kappa and received the Goddard Medal as an outstanding graduating senior.
He then attended the UM School of Medicine in Baltimore, earning his medical doctorate in 2000. After completing a residency in internal medicine at UMUH, Milad completed his clinical fellowships at NIH, and went on to work in the Office of the Secretary for Health and Human Services, tackling national biodefense issues as well as H1N1 pandemic influenza.
For the last two years, Dr. Pooran has served in private practice as a critical care physician and treats veterans at the VA Hospital serving western Maryland.
During medical school, Dr. Pooran enlisted as a member of the U.S. Air Force active reserve with the Maryland Air National Guard. During his service, he has deployed and provided support for flying and humanitarian operations on all seven continents and served as a combat medic and operational flight surgeon. During his years of service, he has risen to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He is a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Milad is an avid private pilot, with a single engine land and sea rating and nearly 400 hours as a pilot in command, as well as 300 hours of military flight time. He and his wife Amy, a pediatric critical care nurse, are newly married. They enjoy walking their rescued puppy Aliza.
Dr. Pooran’s combination of knowledge and experiences in the private sector, academia, government, and the military and his multicultural background provide him with a unique leadership perspective on the issues and opportunities facing the United States.
