Biography of John LaFerla from Laferla For Congress 

 

John is a resident of Maryland’s Eastern Shore, where he has practiced Obstetrics and Gynecology for more than a decade. His home is in Kent County and his private office is in Queen Anne’s County. He also sees patients at federally funded clinics in Caroline county and practices Public Health in Talbot.

He attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, and then Albany Medical College, receiving his MD in 1972. Later in his career he attended the University of Michigan School of Public Health, earning a Master’s in 1988. Before settling into private practice here in Maryland he practiced, taught in medical schools, and worked in an HMO in the Midwest.

In Maryland he has been President of the Kent County Democratic Club and has served as Chair of the Kent County Democratic Central Committee. He has been a hard-working supporter of Democratic candidates in local, state, and national elections and was prepared to support Frank Kratovil to regain his former seat in Congress. When Frank decided not to run, John stepped up and is now a candidate for Representative to U.S. Congress from Maryland’s First District.

John’s organizational experiences include having served as President of his local congregation, the Unitarian-Universalists of the Chester River. For several years he was Treasurer of the Kent County Medical Society. In the past he has been assistant editor of a medical journal and also has been President of the American Society for Psychosomatic Obstetrics and Gynecology. In 1972 he was President of the student body at Albany Medical College and recently has been the Chief of Surgery for Chester River Hospital. He currently serves on the Public Health and Legislative committees of the Maryland State Medical Society.

John donates time, skills, and/or money to a wide variety of causes including Habitiat for Humanity, United Fund, Planned Parenthood, and Public Radio among others. He has twice travelled to South America to provide gynecologic surgery to poor women in rural Peru. He has served as chair of the Social Justice committee at his local church and has volunteered to help “Adopt-a-Highway” clean-up crews on the Eastern Shore.

John is married and has 4 grown children, and a stepson currently in college. In the last few years he has been blessed with 2 beautiful grandchildren.
