Joe was born in Germantown Hospital, the son of Jack and Theresa Rooney, and raised in Ardsley, Pennsylvania, 4th in a loving family of seven children. Joe graduated with honors from Bishop McDevitt High School and earned an NROTC scholarship to Cornell University where he studied Mechanical Engineering. Upon receiving his Bachelor of Science degree, Joe was commissioned as a Lieutenant of Marines in 1980. Joe’s family has a proud history of military service. His two grandfathers fought in WWI, his maternal grandfather having joined the Army shortly after emigrating from Ireland. Joe’s father served during the Korean War and his brother Jack was a Naval Aviator. Joe’s brother Tom proudly served as an Abington Twp Police Officer.

Following Marine Corps training at Quantico, Joe earned his Navy Wings at the Naval Air Station in Meridian, MS in 1982. As an added bonus, Joe met the fetching LT. Beth Hubert in Meridian while both were training to land on the aircraft carrier USS Constellation. (After twenty-five years of marriage, Beth is still the most beautiful woman he knows.) Joe served for twenty-three years in the USMC flying both the F4S Phantom and the F18 Hornet. He retired from the Reserves in 2003 as a Lieutenant Colonel. Joe’s wife Beth has an incredible life story of her own. She was one of the Navy’s first female jet pilots, received her Masters Degree in Aerospace Engineering from the Naval Post Graduate School and was only the second woman to graduate from the prestigious US Navy Test Pilot School. Beth was also a candidate for the NASA astronaut program before receiving her greatest promotion, becoming the mother of five wonderful children. Beth retired from the Navy Reserves as a Commander.

Joe and Beth have five children: Sierra, Orion, Journey, Sonora and Forte. Sierra, (US Naval Academy 2011) now serves aboard the USS KLAKRING based in Jacksonville, FL. She will train to become a Surface Nuclear Power Engineer in the Navy after her first tour. Orion is a junior at the US Air Force Academy and hopes to become an Air Force Fighter Pilot. Journey is a senior at Bishop McDevitt HS. He recently completed his Eagle Scout Project and working to attend a service academy. During this journey, the Rooneys visited twenty countries and sailed over 15,000 miles. Over the years, they encountered many different peoples and cultures including two years in Malaysia and Indonesia. It was an incredibly challenging, exciting, and rewarding trip that reinforced to the whole family just how wonderful America truly is and how blessed we are.

For twenty-one years Joe has been a pilot with Delta Air Lines and is now a B737 Captain. Joe has served on several school boards and has actively participated in charity work, communityvolunteerism, and scouting. Joe is an avid hunter and sportsman. The Rooneys are members of Queen of Peace Parish in Ardsley, PA. Joe and Beth both understand the value of service and live by the axiom “pay it forward.”They believe that the only way to honor the sacrifices made by our parents is to play an active role in ensuring that we hand off a better America to our children.

“It is humbling to realize that our kids are now on the front lines defending us and our great nation. I look forward to utilizing my breadth and depth of experience to fight effectively for the future of this new generation of Americans as a member of the US House of Representatives. Semper Fi!”
