Biography of Steve Clark from Steve Clark for Congress
Republican businessman Steve Clark is a strong conservative with the energy, experience and values needed to effectively represent Texas in Washington. A successful technology and telecommunications executive for over 20 years he has held senior positions at AT&T, Lucent and most recently as a Group Vice President of Avaya, an S&P 500 company. In this capacity he profitably managed over 2000 employees generating over a half a billion dollars in revenue.
Clark, who speaks Chinese and Spanish, was AT&T’s senior executive in China from 1991 – 93. During his tenure there he served as a Director of the American Chamber of Commerce in China and worked with U.S. Trade Representative Carla Hills to open Chinese markets to American products.
He was formerly a Director of the National Association of Manufacturers where he worked to enhance the competitiveness of American companies and create an environment for new job growth.
Between 2004 and 2008, Steve founded, built, grew and subsequently sold a successful fixed wireless internet company, NetPortUSA, which provided broadband access to five counties in East Texas that did not have adequate coverage prior. This created additional jobs in the District. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors (since 2006) of a NASDAQ traded company – symbol JST, and is Chairman of the Audit Committee.
Prior to his business career Clark served his country in the U.S. Air Force and worked as a Texas and U.S. Government instructor at San Antonio College. He has also served as Program Director of the AT&T Executive Education Program at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
A native Texan, Steve Clark earned a Bachelor in Political Communication from SMU in 1974 and a Master in Environmental Management from UTSA in 1976. He and his wife Marlene live in Rockwall and have six children.
