Timothy Murphy Congressional Candidate North Carolina District 10
Biography of Timothy Murphy from Timothy Murphy for Congress
I was born the youngest of seven children in Yadkin County, North Carolina. Growing up poor, I saw first-hand the important role that Welfare and Social Security play in our society. A fan of FDR and LBJ, I have dedicated the majority of my adult writing to furthering support for these programs.
I have held many jobs over the years. I have been a teacher, a business owner and an independent contractor. I have been in agriculture, food service and construction. I have been a warehouser, a retailer and a delivery driver. I’ve shelved library books, canned goods, beauty supplies and tractor parts. I have never lacked employment, though I’ve occasionally lacked money.
I am a writer, a musician and a dreamer. I dream of fulfilling the dreams of the great leaders of the past, from Teddy Roosevelt to Lyndon Johnson. Of an America where none are asked to do without because of the lottery of birth. Where healthcare is a right, not a privilege. And where those that worked for their whole lives are guaranteed that their health and well-being will be provided for in their twilight years.
I am a proud Liberal. I believe that liberal ideals are the bedrock of American exceptionalism. That we value the life of the poorest child on par with that of the richest industrialist is a trait we should hope to never lose. Through legislation and progressive taxation, our country enjoys a standard of living far above that of a century ago. We owe that to the liberal movement. I will fight to preserve it.
I am a proud supporter of Public Education and Public funding for it. I am a graduate of Surry Community College (A.A.S. ’89) and of North Carolina State University (B.A. ’96). I attended these publicly-funded schools on publicly-funded Pell Grants and federally-guaranteed student loans. I cannot stress enough the importance of these institutions and programs. I will fight to see that they stay funded and available for the next generation.
I have lived in this area for the past fifteen years. I have seen first-hand the devastating effects of outsourcing of textile jobs and the growing importance of poverty-assistance programs. I know the frustration of the unemployed and the constant dread of the uninsured. I understand the needs of this Disrtict and will do all that I can to address them if I am elected.
Who is Timothy Murphy? I am just like you. I work the equivalent of a minimum wage job to put food on the table. I worry about the future of the country and about the world my stepsons will inherit. I do what I can to help shape that future in the fashion to which I am best suited. I have decided that I can best do that by serving in the House of Representatives.
