Jeffrey Paul “Jeff” Hunt
Jeff Hunt Congressional Candidate North Carolina District 11
Biography of Jeff Hunt from Jeff Hunt for Congress
District Attorney Jeff Hunt graduated from Wake Forest University in 1972 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics. In 1975 he received his law degree from Wake Forest Law School and was licensed to practice in the same year.
Jeff began his legal career with Long, McClure, Parker and Hunt, an Asheville law firm with an office in Marshall. In 1981 he became in-house Trial and Labor Counsel for the Ecusta Group of Olin Corporation in Brevard. Prior to rejoining the Long Parker law firm, Jeff was a solo practitioner in Brevard.
In 1994 Jeff was elected District Attorney of District 29, consisting of Henderson, Polk, Transylvania, McDowell and Rutherford counties. In 2006 the District was changed to include Henderson, Transylvania and Polk counties. Since winning his first election in 1994, Jeff has been reelected four times, most recently in 2010 without opposition.
As District Attorney, Jeff has led the fight against white collar crime, drunk drivers, and has worked closely with the state legislature to ensure the passage of laws which will appropriately punish convicted felons. His office has consistently had one of the highest rates of convictions for drunk drivers. In addition, Jeff agrees with the large majority of North Carolinians who support the death penalty in appropriate cases and continues to fight hard in courthouses and in the General Assembly to keep capital punishment in North Carolina for especially heinous first degree murder cases.
Jeff has been recognized for his continued leadership as a District Attorney. He was elected by his fellow district attorneys as President of the Conference of District Attorneys and has been elected several times to the Executive Committee of the Conference, most recently in 2010 and 2011.
Jeff has also been involved in community and state service. He has a special interest in hospital and health care issues and economic development across the region. Most notably, he has served continually since 1983 as a member of either the Board of Directors of his local community hospital or of the hospital foundation. He has also served on the State Personnel Board, the State Banking Commission and the State Economic Development Board. Jeff is also a long time member of St. Phillips Episcopal Church in Brevard.
In addition to Jeff’s time spent in elected office and in community service, he has also been very active in Western North Carolina Republican politics and conservative causes for the past 35 years. Recently, he co-chaired Mayor Pat McCrory’s 2008 campaign for governor in Western North Carolina as well as Senator Richard Burr’s election campaign in Western North Carolina. Over the years, Jeff has actively worked on behalf of numerous additional Republican candidates at the local, state and national levels.
Jeff is married to Margaret and they celebrated their 36th wedding anniversary last March. Jeff and Margaret have a son, Reed, who is an assistant district attorney in Mecklenburg County. He and his wife, Amy, are the parents of a son. Jeff and Margaret’s daughter, Emily, is an associate at the New York office of the law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher and Flom, LLP.
Jeff and Margaret have lived, worked and raised a family in Western North Carolina, and Jeff understands the problems facing North Carolinians. He has spent his career fighting on their behalf.
