Three recent books refer to Wayne Seybold as an “Indiana Legend.” Wayne earned the reference in the books, “Indiana Legends” and “Legendary Hoosiers,” as a world class athlete. He and his sister, Natalie (Kim) Seybold-Catron, competed in the 1988 Olympics as Pairs Figure Skaters. Their 10th place finish in Calgary made them the pride of Marion. Recently, “ At the crossroads: middle America and the battle to save the car industry” highlighted the efforts Mayor Seybold has made to secure and grow General Motors in Marion.
Growing up in a trailer park on Marion’s South Side, the Seybolds never had a lot of money. Wayne’s parents gave up a larger house in order to fund Wayne and Kim’s training. When times were hard for the Seybolds, the Marion community came to their aid.
It was the generous fundraising efforts of the citizens of Marion to help pay for their training that formed the strong beyond between Wayne and his hometown. Marion residents contributed over $40,000 to help Wayne and Kim train, and the Seybolds have never forgotten Marion’s generosity.
After the Olympics, realizing that his skating career would end someday, Wayne started working in the entertainment industry in Los Angeles, California. While in L.A., Wayne worked as a Line Producer and Co-Producer for numerous skating productions that toured around the world. These shows were also made for television and home video.
These ventures opened the door to the world of promotion, management, and marketing. As a specialist in these areas, Wayne developed a reputation of being able to get things done anywhere in the world. Because of his efforts, On Ice Productions became one of the leading show producers in the world.
Over a decade ago, Wayne decided it was time to leave L.A. to get back to his roots and his family. When asked why he moved back, Wayne said, “It is time to be near family and to give back to the community that gave so much to me and my sister.”
After moving back to Marion, Wayne started his own business, Seybold Skating, and worked for Re/Max Regency Real Estate. He sat on many community boards and was elected to the City Council in 1999. In 2003, he was elected Mayor of Marion and in November 2011, he was chosen by the people to serve as the first three consecutive term Mayor.
Wayne is very proud of his accomplishments and the support he has received from his community. But he is most proud of his wife Jennifer, and their sons, Michael, John, and James. Even with strict demands on his time he puts family in the number one position.
