Biography of John Hatter from John Hatter for Congress
John Hatter was born and raised in Indiana. John is the son of Harold & Margaret Hatter, who instilled him with Midwestern values like integrity, personal responsibility, and service to community. John’s father worked at Cummins, Inc. for more than thirty years and his mother served as a nurse for twenty years. John first worked as a camp counselor for the Boys Club, lifeguard at the city pool, and on the grounds crew for a golf course.
Following high school graduation, John attended the University of Louisville where he was an active member of the Army ROTC program and became a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. Upon graduating, John received a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Political Science and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserve. He trained as a tank platoon leader at Fort Knox, Kentucky and served in various Army Reserve units in Washington, D.C. and Virginia, while working in the United States Senate (on the staff of United States Senator Dan Coats) and earning his Master’s of Public Administration degree from George Mason University.
In 1999, John returned home to Indiana, first working as the Community Involvement Manager at the Cummins Foundation and then as the Executive Director of Resource Development and later as Executive Director of Human Resources at Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana. John has served as a member of the City Planning Commission for ten years and is also a member of the local D.A.R.E. council. Other community activities include past service on the boards of Senior Center Services of Bartholomew County and Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Bartholomew County. John is a 2000 graduate of Leadership Bartholomew County.
John and his wife, Katia, live in Columbus and have two young children, Will and Paige. Katia is the marketing and public relations coordinator for the Columbus Parks and Recreation Department.
