Biography of Sandy Adams

Congresswoman Sandra “Sandy” Adams is currently in her first term serving as the Representative of Florida’s 24th District in the U.S. House. Based in Central Florida, the 24th District includes parts of Brevard, Orange, Seminole and Volusia counties, and is home to Kennedy Space Center and the Daytona International Speedway. As true public servant, Sandy brings concrete legislative experience, a no-nonsense attitude and a commitment to bringing fiscally responsible solutions to Washington, D.C.

Growing up in a military family, Sandy had the opportunity to travel across the United States and around the world as a child, learning first-hand about different regions and cultures. With family members having served in each of the military branches, Sandy understands what it means to serve one’s country and dedicate oneself to military service. That love of service and commitment to her country led Sandy to leave high school early and enroll in the United States Air Force at the age of 17.

During her time in the Air Force, Sandy was married to a fellow military member, which resulted with her leaving the military to start a family. While those family commitments kept her from making a career out of military service, Sandy has maintained a lifelong commitment to helping members of the Armed Forces in whatever way she can.

Years later, after her daughter was born, Sandy was faced with the difficult choice of whether or not to leave an abusive marriage and live with her daughter as a single parent. Like so many others across the nation, Sandy was now faced with the question of how to raise a child on one income while trying to make a better life for her daughter. Instead of turning to the state for help, Sandy challenged herself to work two and three jobs, all while she went back to school to get her GED.

That high school degree opened up a door for Sandy that would be life changing – working during the day and attending the police academy at night. After graduating Sandy served for seventeen years as a deputy sheriff in the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, doing everything from road patrol, foot patrol, and pawnshop oversight to intelligence and undercover work. During her time at the Sheriff’s Office, Sandy found the time to go back to school at night and earn her degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Columbia College while putting her daughter through college at the University of Central Florida. Her career as a deputy sheriff was extremely rewarding and fulfilling, allowing Sandy to continue her public service to the Orange County community.

It was while serving as a deputy sheriff that Sandy met Frank Seton, a fellow deputy on the force. The two were married, and lived happily until he died tragically on duty. It was that terrible loss that caused Sandy to become an advocate for victim’s rights in Tallahassee, testifying before the state legislature and advocating for victims and citizens rights.

That same call to service that drew Sandy to volunteering for military service and signing up to keep our streets safe as a deputy sheriff made her choose to run for a seat in the Florida House of Representatives. Beginning her service in 2002, Sandy made a name for herself as a no-nonsense conservative who was tough on criminals, strong on homeland security issues, and knew how to balance a budget. Sandy completed her service in the Florida House in 2010 and joined the U.S. House of Representatives on January 5, 2011.

Born in Wyandotte, Michigan, Sandy is an alumna of Columbia College. Today, she and her husband, Judge John Adams live in Orlando. Together they have three children.

Former Deputy Sheriff Sandy Adams has built a reputation as a tough, no non-sense leader and is exactly what Central Florida needs in the United States Congress.  While Washington politicians ignore the problems facing our country, Sandy Adams has demonstrated her commitment to responsible spending, strong border protection and national defense, and pro-growth policies that will create jobs.

Sandy opposes the federal healthcare takeover and sponsored the Florida Healthcare Freedom Act which will allow Floridians to opt out of the new federal system.  Sandy’s solutions for healthcare include lowering health care premiums for families and small businesses, increasing access to affordable, high-quality care, and promoting healthier lifestyles – without new taxes or adding to the crushing debt Washington has placed on our families, children and grandchildren.

Sandy has taken a hard line against government spending and new taxes and is a proponent of “zero-based” budgeting in Washington so that bureaucrats have to justify their spending.  Sandy supports a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution and will vote against any legislation that increases spending until we’ve balanced the budget.  Her unwavering support for lower taxes has earned her the endorsement of the National Tax Limitation Committee.

A leader in the fight against illegal immigration, Sandy sponsored legislation expanding the use of E-Verify to end state agencies use of illegal workers as well as legislation to prohibit those here illegally from obtaining driver’s licenses and in-state tuition.  Sandy supports a reform of the immigration system that forces the federal government to enforce the laws on the books and allow state and local law enforcement agencies to also enforce those laws.  She has been endorsed by Americans for Legal Immigration.

Sandy was raised in a military family and joined the U.S. Air Force at age 17.  She knows that NASA isn’t just important to the Central Florida economy and the tens of thousands of jobs it supports, but critical to our national security.  Short-sighted policies that ignore the important military and research responsibilities of the space program jeopardize our standing in the world.

Once a single parent, who worked two jobs seven days a week, Sandy decided to pursue a career in law enforcement.  In 1985, she joined the Orange County Deputy Sheriff’s Department where she served for seventeen years until being elected to the state legislature in 2002.

While working as a deputy sheriff, Sandy met and married fellow deputy Frank Seton, who tragically died in the line of duty.  Frank’s death motivated Sandy to become more active in citizens’ and victims’ rights issues. As she worked to protect our families, she became increasingly disillusioned with what she saw happening at the state level.

Sandy helped found the Central Florida Chapter of the Concerns of Police Survivors and became a leading advocate for victims’ rights.  She traveled to Tallahassee to push for common-sense legislation but as she became more exposed to the process, she became more frustrated as the laws being passed seemed designed to protect the predators rather than the victims.  In 2002, Sandy decided that rather than complain, she was going to do something about it, ran, and won a seat in the Florida House of Representatives.

Once again, Sandy watches as Washington politicians refuse to make the tough decisions to get our nation back on track.  Congress puts the special interests ahead of the taxpayers and then leaves us holding the bill.  The Obama-Pelosi spending spree has created a $1.5 trillion deficit and a $14 trillion debt.  These policies are destroying our economy and have created a debt of over $40,000 per person.

We can no longer stand by and watch the politicians in Washington spend us into oblivion. We must reduce the size and scope of government.

That is why we need a leader we know and trust: Sandy Adams.
