Richard E. Mourdock

Richard Mourdock took office as Indiana’s 53rd State Treasurer in February 2007 and was re-elected to another four year term in November 2010. He brings to the office a 30 year record of executive experience in the Hoosier energy, construction, and environmental industries.

Richard serves as Indiana’s Chief Investment Officer, where he seeks to maximize the return on the state’s investment portfolio. He also serves on a total of 13 boards and commissions by virtue of his office. In addition, Richard currently serves as the Vice-Chairman of the College Savings Plans Network and the Midwest Regional Vice-President of the National Association of State Treasurers.

In his first term, Richard was at the center of the national debate regarding the bailouts of the automobile industry as he pursued a case on behalf of Indiana pensioners to the US Supreme Court. As a result of the case, Richard has been frequently cited for his willingness to stand-up for the rule of law, the US Constitution, and individual property rights.

Richard previously served two terms as a Commissioner of Vanderburgh County, where he gained a reputation as a results-oriented leader by setting goals and measuring progress.

Richard holds a Master’s Degree in Geology from Ball State University and a Bachelor’s Degree from Defiance College in Ohio.

On a personal note, Richard is frequently sought after as a speaker on the subjects of Abraham Lincoln and early American politics. Richard has served on numerous Christian mission trips to Bolivia and is currently training to run the Chicago Marathon on his 60th birthday, which will officially be his ninth marathon.

Richard lives in Darmstadt, Indiana, with his wife Marilyn.

Richard Mourdock was elected Indiana’s State Treasurer in November 2006 and was re-elected in 2010, leading the Republican ticket with over 62% of the vote. As Treasurer, Richard has been an integral part of the state’s fiscal health.  Richard’s leadership earned over $1 billion in investment income for taxpayers and successfully expanded the state’s college savings plan.  At the same time, his office has returned an average of 10% of his budget back to the Treasury each year.

Richard is known nation-wide for leading the legal fight to challenge the Obama Administration’s illegal bailout and takeover of Chrysler. Richard took this case all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court on behalf of Indiana pensioners. His courageous efforts were featured in articles by George Will, the Wall Street Journal, as well as on Fox News and other national media outlets.

A solid conservative, Richard is a popular speaker at Republican events and Tea Party rallies alike. Richard’s conservative message of constitutionally limited government was heard by over one million people during the 9-12 March on Washington in 2009.

Prior to his election as State Treasurer, Richard had a successful 30 year career in the private sector, managing businesses in the energy, environmental and construction industries. He also served two terms as County Commissioner of Vanderburgh County.

Richard is a licensed pilot, has been active in Christian Missions in Bolivia, holds a Master’s Degree in Geology from Ball State University and a Bachelor’s Degree from Defiance College in Ohio. Richard has completed six marathons in the past eight years. He and his wife, Marilyn, live in Darmstadt, Indiana.
