Biography of Mark Swomley from

Some of you may know me through Scouts or Church or Business or local community involvement but probably do not know much about my background. My Grandfather grew up in the New Oxford area and owned land in northern York County. My father was born here in Central Pennsylvania and grew up in the Union Deposit area of Dauphin County. After graduating from college, my father moved to North Dakota for his first job where he met my mother, a first generation American of German descent. I was born in Bismarck, ND and at the age of 9mo moved to Connecticut as my father took over the Managing Director position with the Connecticut Lung Association.

While in High school, my father ran for a seat in the state legislature as a Republican in a democratic district and won the 17th district seat. I secured an appointment to the Air Force Academy from Sen. Weicker which I had to give up after injuring my knee while playing football. I instead attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy New York and earned a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering. During my college career, I became a lifeguard, sports trainer, Ski Patroller and also was a nationally ranked kayaker qualifying for a slot to compete at the US Team Trials 4 times. I met my wife, Maria, who attended Russell Sage College also in Troy, while I was attending RPI. We were married in 1981 immediately after she graduated.

After college, I moved to Rochester NY, where I became a Design Engineer for the Gleason Works. While in Rochester, I served as Chairman of the local section of ASME and was heavily involved in Junior Achievement. In 1986, Maria and I moved from Rochester NY to York, PA along with our daughter Christina who was born in 1985. I worked for BMY in West York as Manager of Technical Computing where my team supported all of the engineering and manufacturing computer systems for design, modeling and CNC manufacturing of the military vehicles produced there. Our first son, Adam, was born in 1987.

In 1990, I joined the Hershey Chocolate Company in Hershey, PA as Group Leader of Extended Area Operations where my team was responsible for the operational support for all of the manufacturing networks and computer systems at all of our North American manufacturing plants in Canada and the US. I am currently a Senior Project Manager and have managed the installation of networks and manufacturing systems in almost every plant owned by the Hershey Company including US, Canada, Mexico and China. The international business experience I have gained by personally traveling to these locations to manage the implementation of networks and systems have given me valuable insight into international trade and business issues. Sons Jonathan and Luke were born in 1991 and 1992 respectively. While at Hershey, I was the corporate United Way Chairman in 2000 and 2001 breaking the $1,000,000 employee contribution level for the first time in company history.

I have worked with my wife Maria in Sunday school and Vacation Bible School. I became a Lector at our church and was Treasurer and then Chairman of the White Rose Figure Skating Club. I have served as Scoutmaster of Troop 17 for the past 9 years where I have grown the troop from 6 or 7 boys to over 40 in 2011. I have also been a longtime member of the Springettsbury Planning Commission where I currently hold the position of Secretary. My wife Maria, son Adam and I also built a successful Property Management business in the City of York which we just recently sold.

As you can begin to gather from the brief bio that I have just presented, I have been involved in leadership positions, as a professional and as a volunteer, throughout my entire career. The business experience I have gained will be invaluable in helping to put this great country back on track, while saving our economy and growing jobs.
