Wu Replaces Weiner
As people are just starting to forget Anthony Weiner (D-NY-9) along comes David Wu (D-OR-1) and we get another scandal. There has yet to be a criminal complaint filed against Congressman Wu for alleged “unwanted sexual advances” against the teenage daughter of a family friend. “The Oregonian reported that the 56-year-old Wu “acknowledged a sexual encounter to his senior aides but insisted it was consensual,” according to sources aware of the incident” according to Politico.
Unlike with Weiner, Democrat House Lead Nancy Pelosi (D-CA-8) has called for an investigation by the House Ethics Committee. This is not the first incident for Congressman Wu. Wu is the first Chinese-American that was elected to Congress. He was first elected in 1999.
The Oregonian is reporting that he will not resign and that he is planning to retire when his current term is up. According to POLITCO in a report July 24, 2012 “Democratic insiders said Pelosi and her top lieutenants have made it clear to Wu “that he has no support” from his colleagues or party leaders and that they would like to see him leave the House as soon as possible. Coming so soon after the embarrassing episode that led to the resignation of Rep. Anthony Weiner of New York last month, the last thing Democrats need is another sex scandal on their plate as they try to solve the nation’s debt0ceiling crisis.”
So far the young woman, alleged victim, and her family have yet to comment.
Wu has had several past allegations made against him. There was a sexual assault allegation lodged against him in at 1976 while he was at Stanford University. The complaint was lodged against him by a former girlfriend at the time. Before the 2010 elections Wu sent a picture of him in a tiger costume to his staff. Several staff and consultants quit as a result of troubling emails and phone calls Wu made to them.
Currently Wu and his wife are reportedly separate and considering a divorce. Wu is also supposedly being treated for an unspecified mental health condition.
A larger question in all this would be why did the Democratic Leadership call for an investigation so quickly when in the case of Anthony Weiner, where there were pictures; did they not do the same? What is the difference in the two cases? What was the motivation of the democrat party leadership?
