Biography of Congressman Ed Perlmutter
Whether it’s at the grocery store, coffee shop, dog park or on the phone, Ed’s priority is being accessible and responsive to the hardworking people in the 7th Congressional District.
Ed has deep roots in the 7th Congressional District and has lived in Jefferson County his entire life. His grandfather and father ran a concrete business (in what is now the 7th district) for decades. Ed attended Jefferson County public schools and then worked construction with his father during the summers while in law school at the University of Colorado. He chose to raise his family in the district where his three daughters also attended Jefferson County Public Schools. Ed currently lives in Golden with his wife Nancy, a public school teacher, and their three dogs: Tucker, Charlie and Winston.
In 1994, Ed was elected to the Colorado State Senate as the first Democrat to hold the seat in nearly 30 years. He served two terms and garnered the reputation as a bipartisan bridge-builder and a champion of renewable energy and smart growth policies.
In 2006, Ed was first elected to represent the 7th Congressional District in Congress and is currently serving in his third term. Ed’s top priority in the 112th Congress is creating good jobs for the hardworking people in Colorado. Good paying jobs will be maintained and created by moving forward with construction of the new VA Hospital in Aurora, promoting energy security and independence by working with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and other world-class private sector energy businesses, and expanding Colorado’s role and economic development opportunities in the aerospace industry including the Orion manned space flight program.
In the 112th Congress, Ed is proud to be assigned to the exclusive Financial Services Committee including the following subcommittees: 1) Capital Markets and Government Sponsored Enterprises (GSE); and 2) International Monetary Policy and Trade. Perlmutter is also co-chair of the New Democrat Coalition Energy Task Force.

A Lifelong Resident of the 7th Congressional District
A lifelong resident of Colorado’s 7th Congressional District, Ed Perlmutter is a product of public schools. Ed graduated from Jefferson High School in Edgewater, then earned both undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Colorado at Boulder, working as a laborer on construction projects during the summers.
A Dedicated Father and Community Leader
Ed is the proud father of three daughters – Alexis, Abby, and Zoë. An active member of our community, he led a successful mill levy effort to improve Jeffco Public Schools. As a busy dad, Ed was involved with PTAs, booster clubs, the Applewood Community Church, and coaching the “Angels,” Abby’s competitive softball team.
Ed is a former Trustee for the Midwest Research Institute (the primary operator of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden), and a former Board Member of the National Jewish Medical & Research Center.
A Champion for Colorado in Congress
In 1994, Ed became the first Democrat elected in nearly thirty years to Colorado’s Senate District 20, representing the Wheat Ridge/Golden area. He earned a reputation in the State Senate for his bipartisan leadership carrying legislation promoting renewable energy, consumer protection, and responsible growth. In 2006, with his bipartisan approach and effective leadership, Ed won an impressive victory in one of the most competitive congressional districts in the United States. He currently serves on the Rules Committee and the Financial Services Committee in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Ed returns to Colorado each weekend, where hears from residents of the 7th Congressional District at regular “Government in the Grocery” sessions – open meetings held at local grocery stores.
Among the many awards and recognitions Ed has earned for his public service, he received the prestigious A-List Award from the Aurora Economic Development Council, was named “Legislator of the Year” in 2009 by the Paralyzed Veterans of America Mountain States Chapter, “Distinguished Veteran Advocate” by the United Veterans Committee of Colorado in 2009, and “Man of the Year” by the Aurora Chamber of Commerce in 2008. Ed received a 100% pro-retiree rating from the Alliance for Retired Americans and an “A” grade on TheMiddleClass.org congressional scorecard.
