Army – To Young to Retire at 76?

The video below starts with the retirement of Command Sergeant-Major Jeff Mellinger, 58 years old, who was drafted in 1972. He is reported to be the last draftee and is set to this summer.

Also there is a young man from Villa Rica, Georgia. An ear, nose and throat specialist, Dr. John Burson is only 76 and on his fourth tour since 2005. From the video below, this most likely will not be his last tour.

A volunteer with the Reserves, Dr. Burson has twice been to Iraq and twice to Afghanistan. In 1955 he joined the Army but never saw combat. He missed Korea and Vietnam and spent 26 years out of uniform.

“There not sure if I’m a father figure or a grandfather figure,” Dr. Burson says. “I carry with me mostly an appreciation for the incredible sacrifice I see among the young people here. The real dedication, the love of country…it’s an opportunity to come back and sort of pay back a little to your country,”

Hero’s which have given parts of their life to their country.
