Biography of Sylvia Romo from Sylvia Romo for Congress
A proven leader who began standing up for those in need at an early age, Sylvia Romo has dedicated most of her life to public service.
As Bexar County’s Tax Assessor-Collector, Sylvia is responsible for the collection and disbursement of over $2.5 billion in tax dollars every year and oversees a staff of more than 200 with an annual operating budget of $9.7 million dollars.
While holding a full time job and raising her family, Sylvia put herself through college. While at the University of Texas at San Antonio, she realized her longstanding dream of obtaining her bachelor’s degree in business administration which allowed her to start her own tax, accounting, and business advisory firm.
In 1992, Sylvia was elected to serve the people of District 125 in the Texas House of Representatives. As a legislator, Sylvia passed a major constitutional amendment to help women and minority-owned businesses and authored 90 bills while in office. At the time of her service in the Texas House, Sylvia was one of only three women ever appointed to the powerful Ways and Means Committee.
In 1996, Sylvia became the first woman elected as Tax Assessor-Collector—and the first Latina elected to a countywide executive post in Bexar County. She is widely recognized as an innovator as a result of the reforms that have made the Bexar County Tax Assessor-Collector’s office one of the most efficient in Texas. Under her leadership, the office provides dependable and efficient services to more than 1.7 million people.
A native of San Antonio, Sylvia is the proud mother of four sons and the proud grandmother of five grandchildren.
Sylvia is a Certified Public Accountant, and holds the certifications of Registered Texas Assessor and Certified Tax Administrator.
Sylvia’s honors and accolades include being inducted into the San Antonio Women’s Hall of Fame in 2000, and being selected to participate in the White House Women’s Economic Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C. Sylvia was also named a Fellow of the Fleming Fellows Leadership Institute sponsored by the Kellogg Foundation. She has been a member of the President’s Advisory Committee on Women’s Business Ownership and was named a Woman of Power by the Mexican American Business & Professional Women of San Antonio. She has also been named an Outstanding Woman in Business by the San Antonio Express-News. She was named Woman of the Decade by the Business and Professional Women’s Foundation of New York City.
