Salomon Torres Congressional Candidate Texas District 34
Biography of Salomon Torres from Salomon Torres for Congress Committee
“I am Salomon Torres, your Democratic candidate for Congress, representing the newly created 34th District of Texas. I am committed to help Texans with the challenges they face and to assure them that we can have a better tomorrow.
I come from a family of 10 and am the youngest of 8 siblings. We were raised in La Feria in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas. Growing up in a migrant family, we harvested crops and packed seasonal fruit in the Rio Grande Valley and in the summers we migrated to work in the canneries of Wisconsin and the fields of California. We all helped our late parents to survive and break the cycle of poverty.
Nothing motivates a child more than poverty and the hope that more opportunities will come if one works hard. I graduated with honors from La Feria High School. Later, I proceeded to earn degrees at St. Edward’s University (BBA), the LBJ School of Public Affairs (MPA), and Columbia Law School (JD) in New York.
My wife, Ivette, is from East Los Angeles and also made her own way. She attended Fountain Valley Preparatory School in Colorado on a full scholarship and Georgetown University (BA) in Washington, D.C. Ivette works for the Regional Academic Health Center in Harlingen and manages clinical studies on Hispanic health and nutrition and a national study on children’s health. At home, we are blessed every day with the love of our three children, Joaquin (4) and twins Marielle and Marisol (1). We have lived in Harlingen since our move to the Valley in 2001 and are members of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish.
For nine years I have served as District Director in the Rio Grande Valley for U.S. Congressman Rubén Hinojosa, one of the most respected and effective Members of Congress that has ever represented Texas. Prior to this post, I served as the Economic Development Corporation Director for the City of San Benito. I am no stranger to Washington, D.C. In the nation’s capital, I did legislative advocacy work for a major law firm, worked for a Hispanic-owned federal contractor, and served on Capitol Hill as a Legislative Assistant and Professional Staff Member for the U.S. House Small Business Committee.
I have the legislative experience and proven track record to bring people together to solve complex issues. I am driven to serve with purpose, with integrity, and with success!
It is clear that Texas requires more representation in Washington, representation that is results-oriented and forward-looking. I look forward to meeting you to discuss our strengths, assets, and opportunities.
Together we can and will achieve great things for the 34th Congressional District of Texas! Join me. Let’s make Texas better and let’s help our nation regain confidence in its greatness.”
