Biography of Ky Griffin from Texans for KY Griffin
Born in Woodville, Texas, Ky appreciated from a young age the quality of life Southeast Texas offered. He enjoyed its lakes, rivers, creeks and woods. Always a hard worker and athleticaly inclined he worked in everything from kool aid stands to service stations to grocery stores while competing in organized sports. Ky graduated from the old Kirby High School in Woodville, in 1972. A 1976 graduate from Baylor University, he studied Management and Entrepreneurship and consulted a struggling SBA-financed small business to a positive cash flow.
He graduated from Commonwealth College of Sciences where he received the Rita Barber Scholarship for the Outstanding Student while obtaining a Mortuary Science Degree.
He is a licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer serving Southeast Texas for the past 33 years, 30 of those as an owner and operator of funeral homes, perpetual care cemeteries, a monument company, grave services, rental properties and a flower and gift shop. Ky is Licensed through The Texas Department of Insurance as a General Lines Agent Qualified for Health, Life, Accident and HMO.
Ky serves on the Board of Directors for Lakes Area Hospice and First National Banks of Jasper and Woodville.
A Deacon at First Baptist Church Jasper, Ky has served in The Deacon Family Ministry as well as coached in its Upward Basketball program. He has also served on numerous committees including Personnel, Budget and Finance, Recreation and Committee on Committees.
He is a Past President of the Jasper Chamber of Commerce and has served as Chairman of the annual Dam to Dam Bicycle Ride and the Dam Buster 100 Bicycle Race. He is a past recipient of the Chamber’s Young Person of the Year and Member of the Year Awards. Ky recently received a Small Business Recognition Award at the Governor’s Small Business Forum in Lufkin, Texas.
A long-time member of the Jasper Lions Club, he is a Past President and former Chairman of its Sight Conservation / Eyeglass Recycling Program.
An avid bicyclist, he has ridden the MS-150 Houston to Austin ride for the past eight years and the American Red Cross Tour du Rouge Houston to New Orleans ride for the past three years. Ky is also a member of the National Rifle Association.
Married for over 33 years to his wife, Rhonda, they have two daughters: Megan, a Texas A&M graduate and broker, who lives with her husband Randy in Houston and Collier, a licensed respiratory therapist in Tyler.
