Sonya Holmes Congressional Candidate North Carolina District 2

Biography of Sonya Holmes from Sonya Holmes for Congress

My name is Sonya Holmes, a 48 year old married mother of two daughters. I’m the youngest daughter of Clinton Page and Thelma Hayes. I was raised on a farm that has been in our family for five generations. At age 16, I graduated high school. In 1980, I married my high school sweetheart, Paul. After 31 years, two daughters, and three grandchildren, I couldn’t be more grateful for the life that I have in North Carolina.

My first manufacturing job was with the electronics manufacturer, Trion Inc. in Sanford, North Carolina. It was my responsibility to hang parts to be painted, in a stifling 120 degree enclosed room. Through hard work, I was promoted to assembling electrical panels. My final position with the company was as an inspector, assuring quality.

After ten years with Trion, and with the love and support of my family I decided to go back to school and earn a degree in Criminal Justice. While earning my degree it was necessary for me to also work to support my family, and I accepted a position as a Machine Operator with the furniture manufacturer, Herman Miller. There, I was an important part of the economic growth that the second district had come to rely on. Through hard work, dedication, and determination, I received my degree with Honors.

The final straw for me, that caused me to mount this campaign, was the shutdown of the Omtron/Townsend plant in Siler City, affecting over 150 farmers and more than 400 plant employees, in one fell swoop. Layoffs such as this are all too common in the news today. Red tape and bureaucracy create enormous expense and confusion for business owners and managers. The current conditions are killing jobs.

I have been encouraged by the warm welcome I have received all across this district. We share a common belief that our government must be accountable to the people. For far too long this has not been the practice with those representing the second district.

The founders of the Constitution created the United States House of Representatives as a body for the people to have a more direct say in the government. In 2012, the people will send someone to Washington who will not be concerned about their next election. We the people will send someone who will not be interested in forming long term bonds with interests. We have accepted too long the Federal government’s ever growing involvement in our lives. We must return Washington to its proper Constitutional boundaries.

I pledge to you that I will be accountable to you THE PEOPLE and not the special interest or big business. I will provide you with HONESTY and clarity about the issues that concern you. We do not need someone in office who will simply nurse our wounds along, injecting the patient with feel good sound bites. We need someone who can assemble solutions to the problems we face! I need your help by making it out to the Polls on May 8th and voting for Sonya Holmes for United States Representative for North Carolina’s District 2.
